Undergraduate Skills Development Series

Dr Aisling Harkin, Career & Skills Consultant at the Career Development Centre UCD, conducted a series of workshops to develop the professional skills of E&E engineering students at UCD. This series included:

  • a CV & cover letter workshop
  • an interview preparation workshop
  • CV drop in clinic
(1) Winning applications: creating a successful cv & cover letter

The CV workshop took place from 15:00-17:00 on Thurs. 10/2/2014 in room 234 of the Engineering & Material Science Centre.

Topics covered included:

  • how best to structure your CV
  • how to make your CV as visually impressive as possible
  • what tone and language to use in your CV
  • what and how much information to put in your CV
(2) MAXIMISING YOUR IMPACT AT INTERVIEW

The second workshop of the series gave students the opportunity to learn how best to prepare for an interview. The interview preparation workshop was held at 15:00-17:00 on Thurs. 17/2/2014 in room 206 of the Engineering & Material Science Centre.

Topics covered included:

  • what questions are most likely to be asked in an internship interview
  • what are employers looking for
  • how best to prepare beforehand for an interview
  • the importance of nonverbal communication
(3) Mock Interviews

Paul Sheridan, Employment Services Manager at Engineers Ireland, along with members of the UCD PES Chapter held mock interviews between 14:00-17:00 on Fri 28/2/2014 and 7/3/2014 in room 156 of the Engineering & Material Science Centre. 

Each student was given a 20 minute competency-based interview, followed by 10 minutes of constructive feedback. For each interview, there was a panel of two interviewers: (i) an employment services expert (Paul Sheridan) and (ii) an engineer (Electricity Research Centre PhD student). For the interview, a fictional intern position was offered at the Electricity Research Centre, with all candidates submitted a 1-2 page pdf copy of their CV before the interview. Feedback was also given on their CV.
